Four charged with arson in 2006 Austin church fire
Posted on April 30th, 2010
Four men have been charged with arson in the 2006 burning of St. John’s Presbyterian Church in south Austin. All men were teens at the time of the fire and they face second-degree felony charges and are currently at large. Police and fire officials have been gathering sufficient evidence over the past few years to issue warrants, including statements from a friend and an accomplice who were aware of the plan to commit arson. The fire is estimated to have caused between $30,000 and $50,000 in damage.

Fire at Austin school destroys playground
Posted on April 23rd, 2010
A fire last week broke out at a playground at an Austin school, completely destroying play equipment and damaging nearby trees.
After the fire, police soon announced that they held two juveniles in custody on the suspicion of starting the blaze at Brooke Elementary school in east Austin. Police state that the two juveniles started the fire early in the night of April 11 and are now facing charges of “criminal mischief by arson,” a 3rd degree felony. Luckily no one was injured in the accident, but now the school must clean up the mess and buy new equipment. School officials say they do not know now how long it will take before the school children and community members will be able to use the playground again.

Austin blaze destroys at least 100 motorcycles
Posted on April 16th, 2010
A fire at the Woods Fun Center so large that it could be seen from downtown consumed more than 100 brand new motorcycles last week. Employees were not aware of the fire until heavy smoke began to billow from the building. The lost inventory is estimated to amount to at least $1 million.
The flames came dangerously close to a number of above ground fuel tanks outside the shop but luckily none of the tanks exploded.
The fire posed an unusual problem for firefighters as many of the motorcycles contained significant amounts of magnesium, which burns extremely brightly.
Right now, the main concern is for the lost inventory and what the fire will mean for employees of the shop. “Everyone involved is going to take a hit financially because like I said if we don’t have the inventory to sale then we’re going to be in a bind,” said Michael Sweetland, sales manager at Woods Fun Center.

Texas Man Sentenced to 5 Years for Attempted Arson
Posted on April 9th, 2010
A man from Texas has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for the 2006 attempted arson of luxury condos in Pasadena.
According to court documents, 44 year-old Steven James Murphy planned to torch the 30-unit Vista Del Arroyo Bungalows at 40 Arroyo Drive using a 64 ounce plastic bottle containing gasoline and a delayed ignition timer. Thankfully, the device failed to ignite.
Murphy was sentenced Monday at the federal courthouse in Los Angeles, and admitted to committing the crime on behalf of the Earth Liberation Front, an environmental extremest group. Murphy accepted a plea bargain, and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit arson.
According to the plea bargain, Murphy learned how to make the explosive device from an accomplice, and decided to burn down the multimillion-dollar building project to intimidate and inflict economic harm on individuals they believed were causing harm to the environment.

Police Seek 2 Men in Arson Attack
Posted on April 2nd, 2010
Police in Fort Worth, Texas are seeking two men who intentionally set fire to a building.
Officials with the Fort Worth Police Department released security camera footage of, what they say, is an act of arson. The tape shows a pickup truck stopping in front of a building in the 2900 block of Alta Mere. A suspect wearing a mask begins throwing buckets of liquid, believed to be liter fluid or something similar, all over the building. After six buckets of fuel have been dumped, a second suspect places two propane tanks against the front of the building. Finally a suspect tosses what appears to be a burning flare onto the liquid and the two speed away.
Three Fort Worth firefighters were injured battling the intense flames. Two firefighters were trapped under burning debris for several minutes. This will result in more serious charges for the suspects if they are apprehended.
